Quote
"Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply. They’re either speaking or preparing to speak. They’re filtering everything through their own paradigms, reading their autobiography into other people’s lives."

Dr. Stephen Covey (1932- )

Something I’m trying to do better at, listening, understanding, digesting vs preparing a reply. A major threat to the development of an intellect like mine, alongside laziness and a facility for wrapping even faulty ideas in elegant words, is the need to be clever and be heard which threatens the real goal of understanding more and better.

My Lord and my God,

Listening is hard for me.
I do not exactly mean hard,
for I understand that this is a matter of receiving rather than trying.
What I mean is that I am so action oriented,
so production driven,
that doing is easier for me than being.

I need your help if I am to be still and listen.
I would like to try.
I would like to learn how to sink down into the light of your presence
until I can become comfortable in that posture.
Help me try now.

Thank you. – Amen.
